First Meeting with the Grenoil Expedition
Cinnamon BunThe First Meeting with the Grenoil Expedition marks Broccoli Bunch’s first face-to-face contact with people from another species and the first credible possibility of rejoining a populated world. After spotting distant smoke and searching for a better view from the treetops, Broccoli finds two Grenoil adventurers cutting a path through the forest. Broccoli’s exuberant attempt to become their friend collides with their caution about the expedition, but the Grenoil ranger ultimately offers a place at camp—an invitation that turns isolation into uncertain contact with a wider community.
Discovery in the Wilderness
Broccoli’s approach begins with distance and partial knowledge. Several plumes of smoke merge into one column far away, too distant to reach before sunset, and the sight raises the possibility that an inhabited town might exist beyond the abandoned settlement of Threewells. Broccoli therefore moves from tree to tree, jumping toward the top of a hill to improve the obstructed line of sight. The movement is practical, but it also expresses a growing urgency: the wilderness may no longer be empty, and the smoke may lead to the people Broccoli has been seeking.
The first sign of the expedition is auditory rather than visual. Broccoli pauses between jumps after hearing something below and initially mistakes the sound for a creature moving through the woods. The swearing that follows corrects the misreading; whatever is below is not merely an animal but a group capable of speech, irritation, and purposeful work. This brief sensory reversal makes the encounter feel discovered rather than arranged. Broccoli does not enter a settlement or receive a formal welcome. Instead, the first threshold into society appears beneath the branches, in the middle of a road being cleared.
The Two Grenoil Adventurers
The immediate participants are two Grenoil engaged in expedition labor. Their long knives flash as they cut branches and brambles across the road, while one focuses on chopping and the other throws the severed growth aside. Their division of labor gives the meeting a concrete setting: these are not travelers idling in the forest, but adventurers actively preparing a route through difficult terrain.
Their appearance confirms that Broccoli has encountered a people distinct from humans. The Grenoil have smooth, greenish skin, thick legs, and squat features, with clothing specially cut for their proportions. Their trekking clothes are thick and robust, suited to movement through the woods. The older-looking Grenoil is distinguished by better equipment: articulated leather and metal armor covers his legs and shoulders, a breastplate gleams beneath his jacket, and his greater authority is reflected in the role of ranger. The other is identified as a nervous Grenoil Fencer at level 9, while the ranger is a bored Grenoil Swamp Ranger whose level is unknown. Their contrasting occupations and temperaments—one experienced and controlled, the other anxious and reactive—make the pair a compact representation of the expedition’s practical and defensive sides.
The meeting also preserves the expedition’s own internal friction. One Grenoil complains about always being sent to clear the path, while the deeper-voiced companion responds that he was selected to babysit the other. Later, the fencer questions whether they should bring Broccoli back to camp, and the ranger answers by weighing the danger of allowing the stranger to leave. Their banter prevents the expedition from appearing as a perfectly unified institution; it is a working group whose members argue even while carrying out a shared mission.
Broccoli’s Attempt at Friendship
Broccoli’s first response is immediate delight. After recognizing the pair as frog people, Broccoli grins and lands on the road in front of the two wide-eyed adventurers. The physical entrance is unusually direct: rather than hiding, observing, or waiting for permission, Broccoli completes the final hop and places the self openly before them. The gesture turns a covert approach into an encounter that both sides must now negotiate.
The hoped-for conversation initially fails in a comic and revealing way. Broccoli is so excited that the next jump is nearly missed, then descends from branch to branch while grinning. Once on the road, Broccoli takes a breath, ready to release days of pent-up conversation, but only a breathy giggle emerges. Broccoli flushes, coughs into a closed fist, and tries again. The sequence shows that the desire for connection is stronger than the ability to perform composure; the body exposes the nervousness that the planned greeting cannot conceal.
When speech finally arrives, it comes as an uncontrolled rush. Broccoli introduces the self as Broccoli Bunch, declares a wish to be the Grenoil’s friend, welcomes them to the forest, asks whether they come there often, wonders what it is like to be a frog person, and immediately worries that the wording may be racist or speciesist. Broccoli apologizes in advance for possible rudeness and promises to correct any mistake. The speech combines curiosity, loneliness, ethical self-monitoring, and an almost desperate need for companionship. It also clarifies Broccoli’s practical hopes: finding a town or city, selling possessions, learning about the region, eating something other than honey, and making still more friends.
The Grenoil’s response supplies a sharp contrast. The ranger raises a webbed hand, and Broccoli stops talking. He then greets Broccoli as a human while raising an empty palm, a restrained gesture that acknowledges the stranger without yet offering trust. The fencer asks whether all humans speak so much, and the ranger agrees. Broccoli’s openness is therefore received first as excess rather than intimacy. The scene’s humor rests on a genuine social imbalance: Broccoli treats first contact as an opportunity for immediate friendship, whereas the Grenoil interpret it as an unexpected problem requiring control.
Suspicion and Conditional Shelter
The ranger’s invitation is the encounter’s decisive turn. After Broccoli explains the desire for information, trade, food, and company, the ranger offers to bring Broccoli back to the camp, where others may want to examine the newcomer. The wording makes the offer conditional rather than warmly accepting. Camp promises access to people and resources, but Broccoli is also an object of interest whose unexplained presence must be assessed by the rest of the expedition.
The fencer’s objection exposes the danger beneath the invitation. He asks whether they are really going to bring Broccoli with them, and the ranger answers by asking what other options they have. In his view, allowing Broccoli to leave might jeopardize the expedition. The pair therefore frames the decision as risk management, not hospitality. Broccoli may be harmless, but the Grenoil cannot know that; an unknown figure encountered in contested or unexplored wilderness could expose their position or compromise their mission.
This conditional shelter changes Broccoli’s situation without resolving it. Before the meeting, Broccoli is alone, moving through a forest while searching for signs of habitation. After the ranger’s decision, Broccoli has a possible route to a camp, a group of witnesses, and answers about the surrounding world. At the same time, the expedition’s concern means that the path toward society begins under observation. The first welcome is inseparable from suspicion, and companionship must pass through the practical question of whether Broccoli is safe to take along.
Narrative Significance
The meeting functions as a threshold encounter in Broccoli’s journey. The distant smoke first announces that the wilderness may contain a living community; the two Grenoil then embody that community in miniature. Broccoli’s crossing from the trees onto the road is consequently more than a change of position. It is the movement from solitary exploration into social negotiation, with the possibility of friendship on one side and expeditionary caution on the other.
The scene also establishes a recurring contrast in Broccoli’s character. Broccoli interprets contact through friendship, conversation, and shared curiosity, while the Grenoil interpret the same contact through mission security and collective responsibility. Neither perspective is presented as wholly sufficient by itself. Broccoli’s eagerness creates an opening that caution alone might close, yet the ranger’s hesitation recognizes consequences that Broccoli’s excitement overlooks. Their meeting thus makes social belonging possible without pretending that belonging is automatic.
Finally, the encounter expands the world through embodied difference rather than exposition alone. The Grenoil are introduced by their greenish skin, squat proportions, specialized clothing, webbed hands, equipment, occupations, and accents, then made socially legible through their quarrel and professional judgment. Their first contact with Broccoli is funny because the parties misunderstand one another, but it is consequential because the misunderstanding does not end the exchange. The ranger’s decision to take Broccoli to camp leaves the meeting suspended between rescue, investigation, and the first step toward genuine alliance.
